Hello Reader.
Welcome to the first edition of 2025. The past two months have been nothing short of transformative for the country, marking a new era in Botswana’s mining journey. From the landmark agreement with De Beers to a commanding presence at Mining Indaba 2025, these developments reaffirm Botswana’s global leadership in mining.
The signing of the new Botswana-De Beers agreement was a watershed moment after drawn-out negotiation process spanning five years and two administrations, the agreement was finalised within 100 days of President Advocate Duma Boko’s tenure. The ultimate signing of the agreement underscores the new administration’s commitment to ensuring that Botswana remains a formidable force in the diamond sector.
The agreement extends Debswana’s mining licences until 2054, securing decades of continued partnership. Moreover, the structured increase in Botswana’s share of diamond sales through Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) — reaching parity with De Beers by the end of the contract — signals a shift towards greater local beneficiation. The Diamonds for Development Fund, with an initial investment of BWP 1 billion, further supports Botswana’s broader economic ambitions.
With this new deal, Botswana will no longer just be a supplier of rough diamonds; it is shaping the future of the industry. The country is actively cementing its position in the entire diamond value chain. This strategic move will create jobs, foster skills development, and contribute to economic diversification — a crucial step as Botswana seeks to reduce reliance on rough diamond exports.
These agreements could not have been finalised at a more opportune moment. At Mining Indaba 2025, Botswana took centre stage, demonstrating its vision for sustainable mining and economic
transformation. Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Kenewendo, led high-profile discussions, reinforcing the country’s commitment to ensuring that its mineral wealth benefits both its citizens and regional partners. Debswana executives also played a key role, engaging in discussions on mining technology, responsible mine closure, and value addition.
The unveiling of Botswana Mining Vol. 1 during the Mining Indaba week was another proud milestone. This comprehensive publication, produced by The Projects Magazine, provides a detailed account of Botswana’s mining potential and investment opportunities. The publication showcases Botswana’s commitment to transparency, governance, and investor confidence. It highlights the country’s strategic role in the global green transition, particularly as the world move towards critical minerals essential for clean energy technologies.
What emerges from all these developments is a resounding truth: Botswana is not merely participating in the global mining industry; it is leading the conversation. The country has mastered the delicate balance of leveraging its mineral wealth while ensuring that its people remain the primary beneficiaries. This model, rooted in ethical mining and sustainable economic planning, is one that many resource-rich nations aspire to emulate.
As we reflect on these historic events, one thing is certain — Botswana’s mining sector is entering a new era, one defined by innovation, inclusivity, and long-term economic prosperity. The road ahead is promising, and with these strategic agreements in place, Botswana is poised to shape the future of global diamond mining for generations to come.
