Botswana , Zimbabwe & Mozambique commit to reviving Limpopo corridor

In a strategic move to enhance regional trade and supply chain resilience, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique have agreed to rehabilitate the Limpopo Corridor.

“This route will provide an alternative channel for imports and exports via Mozambique’s ports, and help diversify our trade patterns while strengthening supply chain security.” Shared the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Noah Salakae during a stakeholder engagement for NDP12 recently.

According to the Minister, Botswana’s existing infrastructure is in a poor state , worsened by recent floods. He highlighted, “increased investment in maintenance is critical. Our rail system is constrained by a single line running north to south, limiting freight options and trade routes. The development of alternative trade corridors is now not just desirable—it is essential.”

Despite the challenges, Salakae notes progress. “Several road infrastructure projects are underway across the country. Feasibility studies are also ongoing for three key rail links—Mmamabula-Lephalale, Mosetse-Kazungula-Livingstone, and the Trans-Kalahari corridor. “

The minister emphasized that the projects are to be undertaken during NDP 12 with private sector participation through PPP models. He expressed that this “will unlock new economic opportunities, create jobs, and improve access to mineral and agricultural markets while enhancing trade with our neighboring countries.”
