One of the flagship initiatives used by Orapa Letlhakane Damtshaa Mines (OLDM) to raise funds for community development is the General Manager’s Annual Charity Walk—an annual charity event organized by Debswana OLDM as part of its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) program in the Boteti Sub-District of Botswana.
The purpose of the walk is twofold: to raise funds and awareness for community development projects in the Boteti region, and to promote employee wellness and healthy lifestyles.
This year’s event was held under the theme “A Walk for Water”, with the goal of raising P6 million to accelerate community development projects—specifically, water supply connections across the region.
ADDRESSING WATER SHORTAGES IN BOTETI
Boteti is currently facing a severe water shortage, with a daily shortfall of 1.2 million litres, affecting approximately 13,000 households. Villages such as Letlhakane and Mmatshumo are particularly impacted, having experienced rapid population growth and urbanization without corresponding upgrades to the water infrastructure.
A sustainable short-to-medium-term solution has been envisioned, estimated to cost P10 million. Funds raised from this year’s GM Walk will go toward addressing water inflow challenges, improving infrastructure, and enhancing water quality to ensure reliable access for local communities.
IMPACT OF PAST GM WALK PROJECTS
The GM’s Walk has a strong track record of funding impactful community projects. One notable initiative is the ongoing refurbishment of a theatre at Rakops Primary Hospital, valued at P5.2 million and expected to be completed by September 2025. This project is funded through proceeds from the 2024 GM’s Charity Walk.
Another significant project is the construction of a classroom block and storeroom at Mmea Primary School, undertaken in partnership with the Boteti District Council. This initiative, valued at P2.6 million, is being funded by proceeds from the 2022 and 2023 editions of the GM’s Walk.
OLDM General Manager Mogakolodi Maoketsa highlighted the GM’s walk’s success during the recent Gala Dinner in Orapa: “Our work is truly impactful. For example, the maternity wing we contributed to through the GM’s Walk has served over 9,000 patients since 2020, with 4,000 babies delivered in the past five years. This is the kind of meaningful change we are proud to support.”
He further noted: “The special education block we handed over in Tsienyane in 2022 now accommodates 35 learners with special needs—children who might have otherwise been left behind. Through the GM Walk, we are helping to transform their futures.”
“At Mmea Primary School, we are currently constructing a classroom block worth P2.6 million. Previously, 140 students had to learn in makeshift areas such as kitchens and shelters. We are now changing that narrative by providing proper learning spaces.”
