The Projects Issue 5 Vol 6

Welcome to the September–October edition of The Projects Magazine.
This edition is headlined by the Jindal Mmamabula Energy Project — a multibillion-pula independent power production initiative aimed at generating 600MW of electricity.

This landmark Public-Private Partnership (PPP) brings together the Government of Botswana and Indian industrial conglomerate Jindal Power Limited, through its local subsidiary, Jindal Energy Botswana.

Our team recently visited the site to appreciate the scale and progress of the project, which currently employs over 1,200 people. Civil construction work on Boiler Unit 1 is underway, alongside the development of the boiler turbine, air-cooled condensers, chimney, switchyard, and other major civil works.

Other ongoing developments include the Jindal Capricorn Road Construction Project, which will deliver a fully tarred 26-kilometre road connecting the A1 Highway to the Jindal Mmamabula project sites. In addition, work is progressing on a new campsite and the development of the coal mine.

Under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed between Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) and Jindal, the company will build, own, and operate the 600MW coal-fired power plant at Mmamabula. The plant will be fuelled by coal from Jindal’s Mmamabula mine, with electricity supplied to BPC under a 30-year agreement.

The project is expected to create thousands of jobs — approximately 5,000 during the construction phase and 1,000 permanent positions once operational. Electricity generation from Unit 1 is expected to begin feeding into Botswana’s national grid by 2027, with subsequent units coming online at four-month intervals thereafter.

Jindal Resources Botswana holds mining rights to over 2.7 billion tonnes of coal in the East Mmamabula coalfields, positioning the company to serve both domestic and regional energy markets.

This edition also shines a spotlight on this year’s Global Expo, held in early October — the premier business-to-business multisectoral exposition featuring high-level discussions. This year’s event marked President Boko’s first Global Expo since assuming office last November. It also hosted the inaugural Pula Investment Conference, which showcased major investment-ready projects poised to transform Botswana’s economy.

We further highlight key pronouncements from the Draft National Development Plan 12, currently under debate in Parliament.

As always, The Projects Magazine continues to serve its readers by providing reliable, insightful, and timely information — especially for investors seeking opportunities across Botswana and beyond.

Enjoy your read!
