Managing Director of Fiducia, Dr Thapelo Matsheka, has cautioned businesses and government against compromising governance and transparency in the pursuit of ambitious investment and growth targets.
Speaking during a panel discussion on Governance and Investment Readiness: Building Confidence, Protecting Capital and Driving Growth at the Botswana Investment Forum 2026, Matsheka emphasised that ambition must be matched by the institutional capacity, infrastructure and financial resources required to deliver it.
He warned that the desperation to achieve ambitious goals can expose organisations to governance failures, particularly when transparency, accountability and the rule of law are compromised.
Matsheka stressed that strong governance is essential not only for government institutions but also for private entities seeking to attract investment, protect shareholder interests and build stakeholder confidence.
He further urged businesses, particularly small enterprises, to establish appropriate governance structures, committees and codes of conduct from the outset, arguing that transparency and accountability are critical foundations for sustainable growth and investment readiness
