President Duma Boko toured Milk Valley Farm in Lobatse this morning as Botswana moves to strengthen local dairy production and reduce reliance on imports.
The tour formed part of the President’s Project Tour hosted by the Botswana Development Corporation. Botswana Development Corporation Managing Director Oteng Keabetswe said the farm is entering a critical growth phase with calving peaking in November and December.
He said the farm is anticipating between 400 and 500 calves by the end of January.
Keabetswe said the farm has started selling milk and demand is very high with calls coming in every day. The milk tanks are emptied every two days as sales continue to grow.
He said the project has started making money and is expected to break even on daily operating expenses once it reaches about 400 cows in milk.
The tour highlighted Milk Valley Farm as a key project in Botswana’s drive to build a secure and sustainable local dairy industry
